Ethiopia

To enter a church in Ethiopian you must put off your shoes and go barefoot in the shadow. People with white clothes pray, sing....

The faces of three bearded men represent the Holy Trinity and mark one of the fundamentals  of the Ethiopian Orthodoxy. From the earliest Councils of Christianity, each of its three major branches - Rome, Byzantium, and Alexandria ( to which the Ethiopian Church belonged before breaking away ) advanced their own position. The Council... occasioned the ( as yet  unresolved ) schism of the church.
The debate over the nature of the Trinity was important in the Ethiopian church. The school of thought, for instance, believed that the two natures of Christ converged only at his baptism to form a unity, because they assumed that, prior to this, Jesus had been a human being. The adoptionists, on the other hand, believed that Jesus only became the Christ at the time of baptism by the
Holy Spirit. Proponents of the thrice-born-theory were even convinced that Jesus had undergone three birth : firstly for Eternity through the Father; secondly through the Virgen Mary by way of immaculate conception, and lastly through baptism by the Holy Spirit.
Many synods had to be convened to preserve the unity of the Ethiopian church, especially in the 17
th century. A compromise was at least reached; Jesus was Christ (by the Father), through the Holy Spirit... There is a three-fold distinction between the intelligence of the Father, its expression through the Son, and its vitality and effective manifestation through the Holy Spirit.

" Each of us has a " zar ", but not all of us are aware of it, says the priest. Only those whose star is easily taken show signs of being possessed. But there are also those who fail to perform certain important rites in honour of the zar. Some ignore warnings or they forget that the zars are paticularly active in the early spring... to the start of the rainy season or at sunrise. For some people it is safer not to venture out of doors at such times, or to seek refuge in a church. If not, they may run the risk of falling under the spell of evil people. " Most Ethiopians preferred not to speak about the zars.

Olive trees indicate the presence of a church

As most Ethiopian churches of the edge of the Rift Valley, Saint Mikaél church in Ankobâr is surrounded by a grove called ased, which exuberance recalls the forest relics of the area and contrasts with the surrounding cultivated landscape. Rather than a forest trace, the ased is a garden organized in a way that reflects Amhara' s concentric vision of the world. For this orthodox people, the figure of the circle is indeed omnipresent: it is found in the perception of time, in the social organization, in the management of space, in the architecture of Saint Mikaél church as well as in the management of the ased' s vegetation. Each of the three surrounding vegetation belts identified is associated with a degree of purity that decreases from the center to the periphery and is managed differently. It is also considered as a cemetery where junipers and olive trees indicate graves, and where surrounding plants have therapeutic properties. The ased is the theatre of strong dynamics where the environment management practices reflect the social evolutions.
